Large-size user-friendly printer, solid build, quality components, needs few simple upgrades.
5 Stars
Large-size user-friendly printer, solid build, quality components, needs few simple upgrades.
For the review, I tested the stock configuration (out of the box, no upgrades). There are three minor upgrades that I consider essential (I'll mention them as they come up), but otherwise, the standard configuration is quite good.1) Unboxing and assembly. The printer comes in two main parts: the chassis with the Y-axis and the bed, all pre-assembled, and the Z-axis with the X-axis gantry and the hotend assembly. The Z-axis appears flexible when you take it out of the box but becomes very rigid after installation. The small extra bits are the filament holder and the filament runout sensor. The frame is very rigid once all bolts are tight. This includes not just the bolts you need for assembly but all the bolts already installed: they can loosen during shipping, so go over every bolt and make sure it’s tight. Also, check all the rollers (bed and hotend) and adjust the excentric nuts if necessary so there is no wobble. Overall, the assembly takes maybe 30 minutes if you take it very deliberately.2) Setup and calibration. The only real calibration the printer needs is bed leveling. Bed leveling is manual. ABL upgrades exist if you want to tinker, but I found manual leveling easy and reliable after one simple upgrade. I recommend replacing the bed springs with 18mm silicone stands (stands for Creality printers work fine, just don’t get the ones for Ender-3 because one of them is shorter). The springs that come with the printer are OK, but they do drift, like all springs on this type of printer. The second problem you need to deal with right away is the placement of the bed cable: the cable rubs on the underside of the bed and slowly turns the leveling wheel. You can jury-rig something with cable ties to hold the cable away from the wheel, but there are also several free STLs for a cable holder. The initial leveling is done with the paper method, but for the perfect leveling, you will want to print a large one-layer square and adjust the wheels as it is printing. I also recommend adjusting the position of the filament sensor: after loading the filament, loosen the screw that holds the sensor and adjust the angle for minimum friction of the filament on the sensor casing.3) Build and components. The build is solid, the all-metal frame is very rigid once all the bolts are tight. The X-axis uses an extrusion and a set of rollers instead of rods and bearings. Z-axis uses dual motors. The motors seem to be more than adequate for the job: I had no problems with overheating. The fans are noisy, especially the power supply fan, but other than that, they work fine. The extruder is easy to operate and appears to be plenty strong. One interesting component choice is the hotend: instead of the more common Creality hotend, this printer uses a clone of the E3D-V5 J-head hotend (E3D-V6 upgrade is possible if you want). I find this a better hotend, and it is compatible with V6 nozzles, so there is a wider choice of exotic nozzles than for the MK8 hotends. The bed is excellent, at least for PLA: once the printer is leveled, the adhesion is perfect, but after the bed cools down, the print is barely attached. By the way, the included scraper for print removal is also outstanding. The filament runout sensor is a basic mechanical switch, which I found to be the best kind: they just work.4) Operation. The printer is operated by a touch screen. The menu is mostly straightforward but somewhat limited. Some predefined parameters appear to be impossible to change: for example, filament loading always happens at 230C. Preheat presets exist for PLA and ABS, but there is also manual temperature setup (under Setup menu, not under Preheat). Slicer support is sorely lacking: the enclosed version of Cura is ancient, and there are no official profiles for any other slicers. Community profiles are readily available and are pretty good, although you will likely need to tweak them for your needs. Once the printer starts, you may need to adjust the bed leveling for the first layer, especially if you did not upgrade the springs. The filament runout sensor is reliable, and the printer resumes perfectly after the runout. Reloading the filament is not as good as it could be because the touch screen does not operate while the printer is paused: you can’t operate the extruder and have to push the filament manually.5) Print quality and utility. Let’s state the obvious: the printer is LARGE. It handles small jobs just fine, though. Also, this is a fast machine. The extrusion is very even, and layer lines and other artifacts are on par with the best printers of this class. One major weakness of this printer out of the box is the part cooling. The printer in the stock configuration is essentially incapable of bridging, and the overhangs are terrible. The problem is in the part cooling fan duct: while the fan itself is not the most powerful, it is a standard blower for prints like Enders. But the duct doesn’t really direct the air at the part at all: it’s too far away and is angled wrong. I consider a replacement fan duct the third essential upgrade. You can replace just the fan duct (very easy, the X carriage is very well designed and easy to work with) or replace the blower fan as well. There are numerous free designs for both options (designs for Anycubic i3 do work, that printer has rods for the X-axis, but the insides of the carriage are the same).Overall, it is a beginner-friendly printer, easy to assemble, set up, and use. I do recommend the three upgrades right away: silicone bed stands, bed cable harness, and replacement part cooling duct. If you like to tinker with your hardware, there are plenty of other upgrade options, but none are vital except the three above.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic quality printer that deserves high praise for the price.
Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2020
The Mega X definitely blew away my expectations. The assembly process is extremly easy, it comes in two parts: the base, and the carriage. All you have to do is put in about 8-10 screws, plug in about 4 connectors, and level the bed. It took me less than an hour to get this thing printing. It's an impressive design.

The design is robust and of high quality with dual lead screw z axis providing greater stability and precison and the solid base and y axis design allowing compactness. The touchscreen UI is very easy to use and navigate, leveling the bed is relativly easy (I use a dial indicator, but the paper method is usually fine). Overall build and material screams high quality since there aren't many plastic components to this printer. The ultra base is like magic, no glue or hairspray required since it's textured glass. I didn't have a single issue with prints not sticking to the bed.

Initial reaction: The sample file the printer comes with seems off in code because it has a egregious amount of stringing, however, using the Cura slicer, it is easily fixable. My first major print was the Halo sign I got from Thingiverse, took about 22 hours, and it came out EXTREMELY well, the layers came out smooth and the art/contours well detailed. The UNSC sign and Baby Yoda came out just as well, with both of those made from Silk Silver PLA (made by ttyl). Lastly, the 3D bench was the first test print I made, and while I didn't have the most recent benchy on hand, the comparison between the one in the picture and the other prints speak well. Additionally, I have printed functional parts like gears, slotted mechanisms, etc.. and dimensionally speaking, it has turned out almost perfect parts (+/- 0.008 in.).

Issues: From the 3 odd months I've had this printer, there hasn't been any major issues. There was a time where the hot end broke the nozzle off when I went to replace it with a .15mm nozzle. But I contacted anycubic, and they were extremely quick to send me a replacement. Another issue is that the z axis limit switch lever broke off during leveling. Again, I contacted anycubic and they were quick to send out a replacement. Bottom line, if there are ANY issues, you can contact anycubic and they will help you to the best of their ability. By the way, there is very little language barrier when I emailed them, so thats a plus.

Overall, I would VERY much like to see more support towards modifications of these products like some other manufacturers. Especially for things like auto bed leveling (ex: BL Touch) and firmware updates, etc..

In any case, it's a fantastic product, and I will definitely look towards Anycubic's printers when I buy my next set of printers.

There are numerous free designs for both options (designs for Anycubic i3 do work, that printer has rods for the X-axis, but the insides of the carriage are the same).

Overall, it is a beginner-friendly printer, easy to assemble, set up, and use. I do recommend the three upgrades right away: silicone bed stands, bed cable harness, and replacement part cooling duct. If you like to tinker with your hardware, there are plenty of other upgrade options, but none are vital except the three above.
